TETHERED HOT AIR BALLOON OPERATIONS

Tethering a balloon means that the balloon is anchored. To do this, ropes, or tether lines are run from the balloon itself to at least three fixed points. Generally, heavy vehicles such as 4x4 trucks or cars with trailer hitches are preferred.

What is Required For A Hot Air Balloon Tether?

The balloon arrives at the tether location in a trailer and is inflated on site. There are certain requirements to make the tether possible:

The balloon will require a circular area of at least 200 feet in diameter which is clear of power lines, light standards, trees, or other obstructions which may impede safe operation.

The selected area MUST BE DRY.

A flat grassy area is ideal although a paved surface is acceptable. Short grass is preferable. The area cannot be gravel. The area must be clear from obstructions.

At least three fixed points or heavy vehicles will be required.

Winds must be 6mph or less.

It is always at the pilots’ discretion as to whether or not rides can be given.

How long is A Tether?

A tether operation generally lasts as about 2 hours but may be shorter or longer  depending on weather conditions. A tether ride usually lasts about three to five minutes.

Please note: All flights, whether free flight or tethers are at the discretion of the pilot.

HOW DOES WEATHER AFFECT THE HOT AIR BALLOON TETHER:

A hot air balloon is greatly affected by weather. A clear sunny day does not necessarily make ideal conditions for a hot air balloon tether. The most important factor to consider is wind. In order to tether safely the winds must be 6mph or less. Unfortunately, winds usually become stronger as daytime heating takes place. This means the best conditions usually occur early morning and evening when the winds are most calm.

TIME OF DAY/WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS:

To avoid adverse conditions, tethers are best completed in the early morning hours, before 10:00 am. Later in the day success drops and by afternoon, winds usually prevent continued ballooning operations. During cooler seasons, the time of day becomes less of an issue.

Winds of six miles an hour or more can cause serious problems for tethered balloon operations. All flights, whether free flight or tethers are at the discretion of the pilot.

Cheers Over California Hot Air Balloon tethered promotions that are booked to provide tethered rides will not be held when the surface winds are in excess of six miles and hour.

NIGHT GLOW:

Use of the Cheers Over California Balloons in Night Glow promotions are for static display only. No tethered ride operations are provided during night glows.
